DIVeR: A Dynamic Interactive Video Retrieval Protocol for Disk Array Based Servers

چکیده
Video-on-demand (VOD) is one of the most promising multimedia applications of the near future. In order for such a service to be commercially viable, eecient video retrieval schemes need to be designed. The retrieval scheme should be capable of supporting a large number of users at a high Quality of Service (QoS). In 9], we proposed the Quasi-static Interactive Video Retrieval (QuIVeR) protocol for this purpose. While QuIVeR is capable of supporting a large number of users, it defers user requests until the start of the next service round. When the number of frames per video segment is large and/or the slowest playback rate is small, the service round duration and consequently the interactive latency in QuIVeR can be large. In this paper, we propose the Dynamic Interactive Video Retrieval (DIVeR) protocol. DIVeR decreases interactive latency substantially while supporting a large number of users at a high QoS. Three variations-DIVeR-1, DIVeR-2 and DIVeR-3-are discussed. Numerical results are provided using data from an MPEG coded video of \Star Wars".

متن کاملSupporting Dynamic Relocation of Video Data in Disk-Array-Based Video Servers
Although modification operations on multimedia data such as insertion and/or deletion of video clips are rare, they may cause significant degradation of disk I/O performance in disk-array-based video servers. This is because many existing disk-array-based video servers consider only video playback at normal speed and retrieval-oriented VCR-like operations such as fast-forward and rewind without...

Video-on-demand (VOD) servers need to be eeciently designed in order to support a large number of users viewing the same or diierent videos at diierent rates. In this paper , we propose a simple quasi-static retrieval scheme that may be used for this purpose when interactive disk-array based video servers are used. We assume presence of no buuer at the server and hence, all retrieved segments a...
متن کاملDynamic Buffer Allocation for Conserving Disk Energy in Clustered Video Servers Which Use Replication
Reducing energy consumption is a key concern in video data centers, in which disk arrays consume a significant portion of the total energy. Disks typically support multiple power modes including a low-power mode in which they use considerably less energy than in any other mode. Therefore, extending the length of time that disks stay in low-power mode is important for energy conservation. We pro...
متن کاملA Disk Data Placement and Retrieval Scheme for Supporting Interactive Video-on-Demand
This paper proposes a novel data placement and retrieval scheme based on a general two-level disk array architecture for designing interactive video-on-demand systems. The proposed scheme is of significance because the two-level disk array architecture exploits both parallelism and concurrency offered by fine-grain and coarsegrain disk array structures. Moreover, the execution of an interactive...
